Work Experience
For many students, choosing the right career path can be confusing and incredibly daunting. Work experience can help students gain a deeper understanding of the world of work and practise putting their employability skills to use in a real work setting.
However, there are so many more benefits of work experience for students, such as:
- Helping you decide on which career path might interest you in the future.
- Enabling you to put theory-based learning into practice.
- Helping you to build relationships with the right people.
- Improving your chances on securing a job in the future.
- Improving your self-confidence, maturity and independence.
As a Trust, we have partnered with Changing Education who have developed the ‘Connect’ app which takes work experience into the digital age. The app allows students to apply for their placement, complete all their pre and post work experience activities and complete evaluation surveys online with all their experiences being linked to the key employability skills.

- Essential employability skills unlock learning in the classroom, boosting academic outcomes, perseverance and self belief. They halve the likelihood of being out of work, and increase earnings across a lifetime. They even boost wellbeing and life satisfaction.
- Access to these skills isn’t fair and where they are missed, it undermines social mobility, productivity and wellbeing.
- We think everyone, at every stage of their lives, should have the opportunities to build them.

Labour Market Information
Labour Market Information (LMI) is information about the current economic and employment situation in local areas. It includes data on student destinations, average starting salaries, current trends in employment sectors and recruitment patterns. Students should be encouraged to research into different careers and consider the local labour market information for their area. Students should also make themselves aware of emerging career paths and careers that are on the increase or that are in steady decline due to changes happening in the national and international industries.
