Course Content

PLEASE NOTE: This course will be available to those students gaining a satisfactory pass in English Language in Year 10.

This is a GCSE course. Students will engage in the study of both pre and 20th Century drama and prose, as well as a Shakespeare text.

They will study various texts and will be given the opportunity to explore spiritual, moral, ethical, social and cultural issues, as well as human desires and motivation.

Students will also study poetry from The Anthology selected from the
English Literary Heritage.

They will be expected to have studied either Seamus Heaney and
Gillian Clarke or Carol Ann Duffy and Simon Armitage, along with a bank of pre-1914 poems.

Final Assessments

Coursework

A final mark of 30% is awarded for coursework.

There are three compulsory pieces of coursework: Shakespeare, a prose study and 20th Century drama.

Examination

One written examination, for which 70% of the overall mark is awarded.

  • Section A (45 minutes): One question based on post-1914 prose (30%)
  • Section B (1 hour): One question based on pre and post-1914 poetry from The Anthology (40%)
