Course Content
This is a GCSE course. Students will be engaged in writing tasks for specific purposes to:-
- Argue
- Persuade
- Advise
- Explain
- Describe
- Instruct
Students will be taught to 'craft' work in order to respond to each form appropriately.
Students will respond to a variety of poetry, exploring poems from The Anthology written from an array of cultures, traditions and experiences.
Students will learn to interpret information derived from unseen non-fiction material and respond to subject matter of a topical nature.
Final Assessments
Coursework
There are four compulsory pieces of coursework: Shakespeare, a prose study, the media and original writing. There are three assessed activities on speaking and listening.
40% of the final mark is awarded for coursework:-
- 10% for speaking and listening
- 20% for written work on the compulsory pieces
Examinations
There are two examinations:-
Paper 1: 1 hour 45 minutes (30% of overall mark)
- Section A (1 hour): Reading response to non-fiction/media texts (15%)
- Section B (45 minutes): Choice of one from three written questions, either to argue, persuade or advise (15%)
Paper 2: 1 hour 30 minutes (30% of overall mark)
- Section A (45 minutes): Reading response to poetry from different cultures and traditions (15%)
- Section B (45 minutes): Choice of one from three written questions, either to inform, explain or describe (15%)
