A Message from our Principal

Mr S McLaughlin, Executive Principal at The Brittons Academy
Ms S Scott, Acting Principal at The Brittons Academy

A very warm welcome to The Brittons Academy. You will find the Academy a friendly and welcoming place where students feel safe, are happy and enjoy their learning.

We are an academy that is on the up, as shown by the very positive feedback we received from Ofsted in June 2015. Although we know there are areas where improvements still need to be made, what is clear is that we are a rapidly improving school.

“The Principal and the senior leadership team are providing strong leadership. Since the previous inspection, they have raised expectations and have put many systems and policies in place which have had a positive effect on improving teaching and students’ progress.”

“Behaviour around the academy is good. Students are polite and friendly and they show respect for their surroundings with little evidence of litter or graffiti inside the building.”

The positive feedback was compounded by our examination results in the summer, which showed a 17% improvement over the past 2 years and gave us the best results ever in the 63‑year history of The Brittons Academy.

Our English results are now well above national average and the rapid progress made in English was recognised by Ofsted.

The quality of teaching in English has improved considerably since the previous inspection. As a result, students’ achievement in English is now good.

Similarly, our Maths results improved by 5% this year to above national average. We also saw improvements in the average point scores and the achievement of our most able where there was a 25% improvement.

These gains are the result of a concerted focus on developing the quality of teaching across the Academy, combined with an unswerving focus on student progress. Every student’s progress is monitored regularly and, if they are underachieving, we make sure support and intervention is put in place.

Our curriculum has also contributed to our success. It is based on personalised pathways designed to enable all students to succeed. It also ensures that students develop the skills, values and attributes necessary to become well rounded individuals ready to succeed in their adult lives and make a positive contribution to their community.
